Having had three children in four years while attending acupuncture school full-time, I can attest to the power of East Asian medicine in supporting women throughout the perinatal time. Getting regular treatments in the student clinic made all the world of difference when it came to managing fatigue, nausea, aches and pains, gestational diabetes, labor preparation, post-partum recovery, and boosting lactation. I ended up having fast (7 hour, 5 hour, and 2 hour) natural labors and water births. Some of my classmates who also had babies during school were not so lucky, but even those who ended up needing more medical interventions benefitted greatly from acupuncture and herbal support during their post-partum recovery. By the time I was a senior intern, some of the clinic supervisors were sending their students to find me whenever they were nervous about treating a pregnant patient! Tending to women throughout this time truly holds a special place in my heart. As an aside, I also took all of the available pediatric electives, have always treated my own children with acupuncture and herbs in addition to Western medical care when needed, and was fortunate enough to spend two semesters of my internship treating patients at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.
